My name is Matt and I first started working on this idea in 2017 while preparing to do the transamerica trail in my jeep. I searched the app store to find something to fit my needs, but just couldn't find exactly what I needed, so I built it. Being a software engineer and having worked with mapping technology before, I knew I would be able to create a good solution to having offline access to our map data without having to keep track of where we were on paper maps or roll charts.
Fast forward a couple years, I started renting UTVs whenever traveling with friends and family to Moab so that everyone could get a chance to experience the trails. I found myself digging up the app that I had used to get me through the transamerica trail and adapting it to load other trails in the area. That's when the idea for Trail Companion was born! I now spend less time trying to figure out where I am on a trail, and more time riding it.
Other trail navigation apps rely heavily on content that was recorded and uploaded by other users which can lead to clutter or confusion to choosing a trail. Then, I had to further research that the trail was open and that all the information was correct. This ultimately took time out of driving. I also experienced problems while off-roading such as consistent access to the internet, making it impossible to search for new trails while already riding for the day. Like myself, I assume most people do not want to nor do they purchase offline maps. With our Trail Companion device, your customers will only be able to see your precurated list of trails and routes, and it's all available offline.
